Desmond Lane Reflects on 62 Years in his Homes North Home

Desmond Lane, now 93, has seen many changes in his life. Born and raised in Tingha, he remembers warming his home with a wood fire and cooking mushrooms on the stove. His life has been filled with dedication, family, and resilience, and his home in community housing has been a big part of it.

Desmond left school at 14, became a baker, and later worked in Sydney. He spent a year in Mary Kathleen working in a uranium mine before returning to Tingha. In Inverell, he joined the cordial factory, starting as a bottle washer eventually becoming sales manager.

Desmond and his late wife, whom he met in Tingha, raised four children – Michael, Julie, Desley, and Stephen. Today, their home is the heart of a large family with 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Known as ‘Little Pop,’ Desmond has shared family traditions, like his famous sausage roll recipe, with younger generations.

Desmond’s story shows how important affordable, stable housing is for families in regional areas. Homes North is proud to provide housing that supports families and connections within their communities. Desmond’s home has been more than just a place to live; it has given him the security to lead a full life and create a legacy of love and determination that inspires all who know him.

We thank Demond for sharing his story with us.
