18 Jan Shirley Long Celebrates 53 Years in her Gunnedah Home
Shirley Long is a proud 88-year-old Kamilaroi woman who has lived in her Gunnedah home for over 50 years.
She moved in with her father’s help in 1971, cleaning every part of the house, even underneath. Her home has been improved over the years, with the original floorboards and lino changed to cosy carpet and a new timber kitchen floor.
Shirley was born in Gunnedah. She also lived for many years in St. George, Queensland. She worked on properties wood chippping and burning off before returning home to Gunnedah.
Shirley has six children, with the family spread between Brisbane and Gunnedah. Two of her daughters, Rita and Gloria, live nearby, while two others live in Brisbane. Her son, Ronnie, who also lives close to Shirley is a great help with the garden and walks her dogs regularly. One of her grandsons is a police officer and we laugh when she jokes, “As long as he doesn’t arrest me.”
Shirley also enjoys going to the Salvation Army Church, where she finds comfort and community. She keeps active by joining group exercise classes on a Monday and Wednesday.
Over the years, Shirley has felt supported by Homes North and is grateful for the care and consideration of all our staff, expecially the Resident Engagement team.
Shirley says her Gunnedah home is filled with memories and love. It is a place that Shirley, her family, and friends cherish.
We thank you, Shirley, for sharing her story with us.
